Meeting THE Swing Out Sister

Now THIS is fate, fate, fate!

I had to bring daughter C1 to the dentist over at the 5th Floor of Megamall for a long overdue checkup (2 cavities!!!). After that we had a mother-daughter bonding time — shopping for clothes and a quick lunch at Wendy’s.

I told her I wanted to pass Powerbooks to check some books I was hoping to buy. As we passed the ground floor Atrium, beautiful jazz music was playing. Being such a jazz lover, I was of course attracted to the fairly large crowd gathered around the makeshift stage. Ooooh, there was an autograph signing going on! Wonder who it is???

So we go to the front of the stage where a lady with dark hair and bangs was sitting, signing CDs and who should it be???? Swing Out Sister’s lead singer, Corinne Drewery.

Swing Out Sister is a British jazz group from the 80s. Their kind of music is my favorite kind of jazz — smooth, sultry and pop-ish enough for C1 to love Corinne’s style of singing! It is definitely jazz at one of its finest.

Before we knew it, I was buying their latest album, Beautiful Mess, and heading up the stage to personally meet Corinne and introduce C1.

If there was one thing missing in this whole afternoon adventure, it was that I had no camera with me to record the moment. But that’s OK. We went home with Corinne’s new album playing beautiful music for us.

Here’s a sample of Corinne’s jazzy style:

  1. Jane,

That must have been quite a pleasant SURPRISE ! I was living in Seattle, Washington when they stopped at Virgin Music in San Francisco, 1998 or so !

Must have been quite the experience to talk with Corrine was Andy with her or nearby to be found.

You had one of those moments and are quite fortunate to have met her.

    Thanks for sharing,

    markymark

Jane: Hi Mark! Yes, it was a pleasant, delightful, totally unexpected SURPRISE! Thanks for dropping by.

  2. Jane

I just find Corinne’s voice and looks mesmerizing. She exudes a combination of femininity, sincerity and happiness. No doubt part of it is that bright smile and those blue eyes.
I just wish her music could be more popular

Jane: Hi Rollo. Yes, those huge dark eyes of hers are really captivating. I hear her music on radio very often so I think people are familiar with her songs but don’t associate it readily with her.

  3. Hi Jane,

I am so envious! Sigh, I have been a very big fan of Corrine (SOS) since I was a kid. I hope she’d have a concert in New York soon so I can be as blessed as you are!

Anyway, I am happy for you! God bless!

    Melvin

Jane: Hi Melvin. Thanks for dropping by. Hoping you get your change to meet Corrine some day…

  4. Corinne Drewery is beautiful, almost impossibly so. I have been smitten by Corinne’s beauty and charm ever since I saw her “Breakout” on MTV in the ’80s. She’s beautiful, chic, stylish, elegant, and utterly charming.

And what can you say about Corinne’s ability as a vocalist? She just deals cards in spades to any other “artist” out there today. Her voice is incredibly pure and so melodic. I could listen to her all day (and sometimes do, literally).

You’re very lucky to meet Corinne in person. I’d like to do that someday, but I’m afraid I’d make a fool of myself. It would be like meeting Mona Lisa or Venus DiMilo. I’d probably kiss the ground she walks on…

  5. God, you were so lucky!!!!!!!! The way you describe your experience is how best things happen in our lives, by surprise! every time we plan something never comes out exactly the way we thought at the first time. So i guess you were right about the subtitle of this post FATE: an event (or a course of events) that will inevitably happen in the future… i wish you lots of FATE Jane!

@Ruben – Thank you! FATE things are already happening to me.

  6. Ms Jane, Hello! I’m an SOS fan, too. Actually I rediscovered this group on You-Tube. There are a lot of SOS live videos, MTVs, interviews of the band there. And like your experience seeing and admiring Corrine, most of the emailed comments there only say good words for Corrine. She’s really talented (aside from being the vocalist she’s also the lyricist of the band), charming, visibly warm, has great voice that you just can’t get enough. Stylish but you can feel she’s “masa”. It’s because of her somewhat Cinderella roots. Check that out!

@Cyn – Hi! Thanks for the tip! Yes, I consider myself blessed to have been at the right place at the right time.

Let me know what you think!
