‘Happy Slip’ Comes to the Philippines!

The FilAm YouTuber, Christine Gambito, whose Happy Slip channel now has over a 100,000 subscribers and whose very humorous videos focus on the life of Pinoys trying to make it in a foreign land, is in town.

Never heard of her? Head off to her YouTube channel and get loads of laughs!

She was recently chosen by the DOT as the Philippine Ambassador of Tourism and her wide following on YouTube is expected to generate interest among Filipinos in the US, including Americans, to visit the Philippines.

I was curious about Christine’s choice of title for her YouTube channel until I read that ‘Happy Slip’ came from her Mom’s way of saying “half slip” (hap e-slip). Hehe, isn’t that so Pinoy?

Christine successfully mimics several “family members” all played by her (her Mom, her Dad, her aunt, a FilAm cousin, etc). She gives each of them a Pinoy accent, a way of speaking, Pinoy habits, Pinoy expressions, etc.

She has made over 40 videos to-date and many of them are really so hilarious. This lady is a looker and yet she does comedy with aplomb. No wonder she won second place for Best Comedy in March 2007 at the YouTube Video awards!!! Believe it or not, her comedy sketches have already been viewed over 30 million times!

Living Together, Growing Together (updated)

The theme of my in-laws’ 60th Wedding Anniversary came from an old, almost forgotten movie “The Lost Horizon” with Burt Bacharach’s song, “Living Together, Growing Together”.

While this song never made it big and can hardly be found in CDs of Burt Bacharach songs, we felt this was the most appropriate for our celebration as it talks about how families start out and grow together. Some of the lyrics go this way:

It just takes wood to build a house
Fill it with people and you got a home
Fill it with love and people take root
It’s just like a tree
Where each branch becomes a family.

Living together, growing together
Just being together
That’s how it starts, 3 loving hearts

All pulling together, working together
Just building together
That makes you strong, when things go wrong.

Reaching 60 years of marriage together is quite an achievement. Many of our guests expressed this sentiment and come to think of it, how many couples are actually blessed to live long enough to see through their 60th? I think I myself won’t live long enough to reach that! So we cannot thank the Lord enough for this tremendous blessing He has given to us.

Cousin Marisa found a YouTube video from the actual movie. The lyrics alone express exactly what family is all about.

Last night, at the celebration, we all sang this onstage while the video presentation that C2 and her cousins worked on for days, flashed on a giant screen.

Travel Preparations Go High Tech

Tomorrow I leave for the province with the 2 girls. Hubby and boys follow the next day.

I am looking forward to these next 2 weeks in so many ways. First, it’s my in-laws’ 60th wedding anniversary. Big celebration. Lots of guests, Family coming home from abroad. Reunions galore. Food everywhere. Yup, I think I am gonna love this vacation. And maybe, just maybe, I will finally gain some decent weight…..

Of course, the flip side is all the work I need to bring with me since I am in the middle of a systems implementation project which requires decisions, consultations, teleconferences, and so on.

My kumpare Lito (who works for this company I consult for) gave me the 4-1-1 on how I can be up and running and in touch with the project team through my 3G handset (which I got because it looked nice but never went as far as using it to surf the internet).

This is what I went through:

1. Bought a Smart prepaid SIM (Smart only charges P10 for half an hour — like an internet cafe — while Globe charges by kilobyte downloaded, which will quickly empty your load).  Loaded P300 on it.

2. Configured my phone’s settings and installed Nokia PC Suite on hubby’s laptop

3. Set up via PC Suite the internet connection so the laptop could recognize my Smart wireless connecton

4. Tested everything by logging onto Smart via laptop and voila! I WAS CONNECTED!

Now, it means I can check email and chat with my project team members either via my 3G mobile or on the laptop, using the mobile as a modem.

Hey! I learned something new!

Also found out that my in-laws’ place is a wi-fi spot. Woohoo!

So maybe I need not say good-bye to all of you because it looks like I could actually get some blogging squeezed in during this vacation. Unless…..I get bogged down practicing (I heard we need to prepare for a program during the dinner celebration!!!).

Oh…and yeah! Guess what else I am lugging along….

Blog Action Day: Recyclers Unite!!!!

Today, October 15, is BLOG ACTION DAY!

I know that over here in the Philippines, the day is about to end. But over in North America, the day is not quite half over yet so I am sure there is time to get this thing spreading.

On this day, bloggers from all over the world will blog about — the ENVIRONMENT!

It is really about time we all do our share to protect Mother Nature. The recent spate of very strong earthquakes, devastating typhoons, floods, etc. all point to the urgent, urgent need to protect our planet.

A blogger by the name of Elaine posted some dates of Waste Markets in Metro Manila. While her post was dated January 2007, most of the information on locations and dates of the waste markets are still relevant as well as some telephone numbers of the agencies behind these moves.

Here are some examples of recyclables from her post:

Non-traditional wastes

 

  • Used acid-lead batteries and rechargeable lamps
  • Junk electronic and electrical equipment and appliances

    • * CPU (complete/incomplet e/case) and monitors
    * Printers, scanners, fax, etc
    * Motherboards, PC/telecom cards, printer/med grade boards, hard disk, power/ monitor boards
    * old/obsolete/ broken Betamax, VHS, DVD players
    * Microwave ovens, toasters
    * Electric fans
    * other office and household equipment and appliances

  • Empty ink/toner printer cartridges, dot matrix ribbon cartridges
  • Damaged CDs, VCDs, VHS, betamax and radio cassette tapes
  • Busted tiboli (Christmas) lights
  • Used oil (for registration – do not bring to the area)
  • Styrofoam (polystyrene) and other packaging materials (for donation)
  • Cellphone and cellphone batteries (for donation only)

    • Traditional Waste

  • Used paper and cartons (newspapers, komiks, notebooks, reports, old test papers, phone directories, etc)
  • damaged/broken plastic furniture, containers, bottles, etc. (anything plastic!)
  • Aluminum and tin cans (soda/food cans)

    • You can also exchange these traditional waste items to new products! Used paper/cartons for double-ply tissues, plastics or aluminum cans for plastic hangers…

    If we just look around our homes, we will really find a lot of junk and gunk which can be brought to these waste markets and exchanged for cash. I think we would be surprised at how much cash we can generate from stuff lying around. At the same time, we know these would be recycled into reusable products.

    Let’s do our share to protect our planet!

    Win or Lose, It’s the School We Choose!

    It was not the BLUE school’s day. There were too many shots that went astray, free throws that did not connect, spills, turnovers, steals….

    But I still found myself shouting as C2 and I watched the games from our bedroom TV. And in the midst of trying to follow the Eagles on the court, my fingers were busy texting the scores to C1 who was still having her hair done at the salon.

    Ateneo fought the good fight but La Salle clearly played a good game. My congratulations go to both teams. You gave us all a good game.

    After the games, C2 and I went down to find the box of Krispy Kreme which hubby and M1 bought after coming from a lunch bday party.

    We wanted to try all the school colors but as you can see, even our choice was absolutely skewed in favor of the BLUE school. 🙂

    The one thing I always admire about the BLUE school is when students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends all stand up at the end of a game and, as one, sing the Song for Mary, written by Fr. James Reuter, S.J. In a sports arena, this school’s Alma Mater song rings out and reverberates. As clenched fists pound the air and come to the 2nd stanza, the Coliseum is filled with shouts of “WIN OR LOSE, IT’S THE SCHOOL WE CHOOSE!”

    So yes, we will wait for next year. We bid our graduating players Adieu. Thank you for a wonderful season with us all. And as for the rest of the players who will still be around next year, we are proud of you and look forward to season 71!
