Don’t lose your life savings to pyramiding schemes

A company called Emgoldex Philippines has been in the news lately because of a Securities and Exchange Commission warning to Filipinos that this is a pyramiding scheme.

That gave me the idea to blog about pyramiding schemes as opposed to multilevel marketing because many times, people view these two as one and the same. Not quite.

Where they look similar

Both pyramiding schemes and multilevel marketing (MLMs) have a similar triangular structure where the base gets wider as each new recruit tries to recruit other members so that they earn from their recruits.

But there are more areas where they differ…

The Instagram clean-up and its impact on influencers

Brands and advertising agencies are big on metrics. Page views, number of followers, number of clicks, etc. In the absence of other analytical tools, this has some value in analyzing the success of a campaign and for estimating how wide a reach it has achieved.

BUT (and this is a big BUT)…

Page views can be gamed. The number of clicks can be gamed. And followers can be bought. Pathetic, but it does happen. To be fair, there are also bots that automatically follow you if you are perceived to have some influence in cyberspace. I know that on Twitter, I wonder about eggheads (I refer to Twitter accounts with a default egg instead of a photo) that follow me and yet either don’t have tweets or tweet nonsensical stuff. Fortunately, I don’t have too many of those.

Why, you may ask, are these statistics gamed and why are followers bought? Well, there are those who would benefit from ramped-up page views and followers. Some celebrities and netizens who participate in brand campaigns use these stats to negotiate their price or to show they are that popular. Not all do this, mind you. I have many celebrity and netizen friends who would rather stay authentic rather than fake their popularity and influence. But there are those who would resort to this for some form of personal gain.

Starting a Goal and Gratitude Jar

I had been thinking for a while about how to usher in 2015. I wanted something that would make next year even more meaningful and have more purpose. And I wanted it to be centered on gratitude.

Gratitude quote 1

Isn’t that so true? We wrack our brains sometimes thinking of what to be thankful for and yet if we really became aware and mindful, we’d see the little blessings that come our way each day.

Using Bubby as an ONLINE social media tool to reach Pinoys OFFLINE

In September of 2013, I discovered a new microblogging platform. My friend Noemi was using it and introduced me to the person in the Philippines representing Bubbly, an audio platform that allows you to record 90 seconds of voice. It also allows others to listen to you and if you are on a Premium account (like I am), you get people who subscribe to you.

Bubbly profile

I immediately fell in love with Bubbly. More than just an expressive outlet of my thoughts, I discovered that it was a great platform to draw people with disabilities into social media because of its audio feature. I had visually impaired followers and they were so happy to engage on Bubbly with me!!!

New Beginnings as a Mentee in the 2014 Mentoring Women in Business Programme of the Cherie Blair Foundation

“At each point in our lives, we are at a crossroads. We are the fruit of our past and we are the architects of our future… If you want to know your past, look at your present circumstances. If you want to know your future, look at what is in your mind. ~ Matthieu Ricard”

Reinventing one’s self stops only when one chooses to stop learning. Over the years, I saw myself making decisions that took me 180 degrees away from where my corporate life began. There is a newfound desire to make the rest of my life meaningful and life-changing. I rediscovered my passion for knowledge, feeling like a sponge that just wanted to learn and absorb new things. Just recently, I blogged about those chapters of my life that brought me to where I am today.

And that is again about to change in some way as I embark on yet another twist in life, a challenge that I decided to take up recently. I was accepted into a one-year Mentoring Programme for Women in Business as a mentee under the Cherie Blair Foundation.
