California Pizza Kitchen’s Bloggers Night

Manila’s famous (or more aptly, infamous) rains and floods could not dampen the bloggers’ enthusiasm and determination to attend California Pizza Kitchen’s (CPK) bloggers night at CPK Glorietta 3 last Sept. 10.

It had been raining all day and fiercely at times. Some bloggers were deliberating whether they would still go or not. So I thought that if I left the office at 7pm, I would still be in time for the event. What a surprise met me when I got there a little past 7 pm to see the 2nd floor function room of CPK practically full of bloggers already!

At the registration area, I saw several CPK boxes marked with themes. We were supposed to pick out a theme we wanted. I selected the theme “More Than a Massage” as I was fascinated by its health theme. We found out later that whatever theme we chose corresponded with a new pizza flavor which CPK arranged for us to make.

This was a meet & greet affair. Got to meet Archie Rodriguez, the President of the CPK franchise in the Philippines.

Also had time to chat up emcee RJ Ledesma. I told RJ that I knew he was a yoga teacher and first saw him at Vinyasa. When I introduced myself as the one behind the yoga blog, The Yogini from Manila, it turned out he actually heard of my blog. There and then, we began chatting like 2 people who found something common to talk about.

Later, I also met Brad Geiser, one of the partners behind Geiser Maclang which prepared this event for CPK. I had long wanted to meet Brad who was just a buddy on a social networking site. Another buddy on that network was Jen who was there with her husband Stan.

It was a night of pure fun. I think most of the bloggers there were a lot younger so you can imagine the energy filling the room.

We watched a video about CPK’s beginnings. Gift certificates were later given to those who successfully answered the trivia questions. Next, we were asked to decorate our CPK boxes (they dumped art supplies on each table like colored glue, ribbons, decals, crayons, etc) with the best PICK-UP LINE we could think of. This was really hilarious because these bloggers turned out to have really HOT minds! For the life of me, I could not think of any pick-up line. I began with one that said “Taste Heaven With Me” but stopped after seeing that this was sooo tame compared to some others. Haha…

The best part, at least for me, was when we made our own pizzas depending on the theme we chose. Very aptly, my pizza was the Thai Chicken one, which was so healthy because of its ingredients: scallions, chicken, bean sprouts, carrots and peanuts AND garnished with cilantro. I started out with a pizza crust, then one by one added the ingredients with the help of CPK’s friendly staff. My finished pizza was then marched off to be cooked in a hearth oven (the secret to the delicious CPK taste).

Next time you visit CPK, try one of their other pizza flavors:

1. BBQ Chicken Pizza – the most popular pizza and one of the original recipes of the founders

2. Greek Pizza – made from Mediterranean spiced grilled chicken and Mozzarella cheese, topped with a chilled Greek salad of cucumbers, red onions, fresh tomatoes, Greek olives, Feta cheese and lemon-herb vinaigrett and served with homemade Tzatziki sauce and chopped Italian parsley

3. Jamaican Jerk Chicken – made from grilled Jamaican Jerk spiced chicken breast with spicy sweet Caribbgean sauce, Mozzarella cheese, applewood smoked bacon, mild onions, roasted red & yellow peppers and green onions

4. Cajun Pizza – made from blackened chicken and spicy Andouille sausage with Creole sauce, roasted red and yellow peppers, mild onions and Mozzarella cheese

Pop! Goes the Nestle

I grew up with Pinipig Crunch as my favorite treat. I love ice cream, no doubt about it. But my problem always was this. It would sometimes drip before I could eat it all. Some parts would drop from the popsicle stick if I was not quick on the draw. It could get pretty messy. And I still had a popsicle stick and wrappers to dispose of.

Nestle recently came up with the answer to my woes. Nestle Pops!

It comes in 2 handy sizes. the 62 mL plastic container (which retails at Php25) and the 211mL tub container (which retails at Php75).

(62 mL container)

(211 mL Tub)

Nestle Pops looks like Hershey Kisses (at least that was my first impression). Curious about it, I popped one into my mouth and just savored the chocolate-y flavor until it was soft enough to collapse. And delight of all delights, my palate tasted the vanilla ice cream which is inside each Pop!!! How ingenious!

No messy hands, no wrappers to throw away, no popsicle sticks. Problem solved!

At the moment, Nestle Pops is available at Shell Select Stations nationwide as well as at the MRT.

And….it has its own website! Check it out HERE. It has an online game for games young and old called “Pop’d Stars” which offers an Xbox 360 console with a Rock Band set as the grand prize aside from weekly prizes.

Italianni’s EXTRA Treat

It says something when, in the midst of crisis (rice shortage, escalating gas prices, reeling food prices) an institution decides NOT to pare down its service or hike its prices but instead decides to give EXTRA to its dining customers — no charge, without questions, without being asked. Just like that!

That is exactly what I experienced when I got a special invite from Ann of Yehey.com to be one of 15 bloggers last June 16 to experience and taste Italianni’s EXTRA treat at Bonifacio High Street.

I was the first to arrive at the venue so I chatted briefly with Ann and Jori of Yehey (Jori was wearing a cute panda cap that made him look like Po of Kung Fu Panda fame).

I also got to meet Cyril Reyes, the General Manager of Italianni’s Boni High Street, who indulged me as I did an ambush interview.

Diamond Hotel’s Cake Club (A Sugar Rush Like No Other)

“Buffet” is a term meaning endless choices and is often associated with lunch or dinner. But believe it or not, there is now such a thing as a dessert buffet. And none other than Diamond Hotel lays claim to being Manila’s dessert Mecca.

Last Friday, son M2 and I hied over to the Archaeology Strip of Rockwell Power Plant Mall to be part of the launching of the Cake Club of Diamond Hotel.

Win or Lose, It’s the School We Choose!

It was not the BLUE school’s day. There were too many shots that went astray, free throws that did not connect, spills, turnovers, steals….

But I still found myself shouting as C2 and I watched the games from our bedroom TV. And in the midst of trying to follow the Eagles on the court, my fingers were busy texting the scores to C1 who was still having her hair done at the salon.

Ateneo fought the good fight but La Salle clearly played a good game. My congratulations go to both teams. You gave us all a good game.

After the games, C2 and I went down to find the box of Krispy Kreme which hubby and M1 bought after coming from a lunch bday party.

We wanted to try all the school colors but as you can see, even our choice was absolutely skewed in favor of the BLUE school. 🙂

The one thing I always admire about the BLUE school is when students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends all stand up at the end of a game and, as one, sing the Song for Mary, written by Fr. James Reuter, S.J. In a sports arena, this school’s Alma Mater song rings out and reverberates. As clenched fists pound the air and come to the 2nd stanza, the Coliseum is filled with shouts of “WIN OR LOSE, IT’S THE SCHOOL WE CHOOSE!

Here is a home video shot last year, thanks to a guy called prfctcrclboy.

So yes, we will wait for next year. We bid our graduating players Adieu. Thank you for a wonderful season with us all. And as for the rest of the players who will still be around next year, we are proud of you and look forward to season 71!

Razon’s Halo-Halo

If just for the use of shaved ice instead of ice chunks, Razon’s has my vote.

Eating halo-halo with huge chunks of ice was always an irritant. I always wanted to cut to the “meat” of it by scooping out and eating the beans, fruits, flan. And always the ice got in the way. I have even gone as far as asking for another bowl or cup where I could place the large ice chunks. It’s almost like the outlet serving it up does not care to go the extra mile to make it easier for their clientele to eat it.

Razon’s uses thinly shaved ice that does not shock the nerves in my teeth and the goat’s milk they put in it is the BEST. Also, they have tweaked the sweetness of their ingredients by putting in just the right amount of the saba, macapuno, beans, leche flan and other stuff that in themselves sweeten the dessert without having to add sugar.

In Metro Manila, a serving costs P65; in Guagua, Pampanga where we stopped enroute from Subic, it is P45.
