What Your Sleeping Position Says About You

HOW YOU SLEEP SAYS MORE ABOUT YOU THAN YOU THINK!

I came across an article that talked about how sleeping positions reveal a little bit of one’s personality.

The article stated that “Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service analysed six common sleeping positions – and found that each is linked to a particular personality type.”

OK, before we go on to the rest of the article, look at the illustrations below and decide which is your most frequent sleeping pose.

This is what the BBC article reports about Prof. Idzikowski’s findings:

  • The Foetus: Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet somebody, but soon relax. This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.
  • Log (15%): Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible.
  • The yearner (13%): People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.
  • Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don’t like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.
  • Freefall (7%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don’t like criticism, or extreme situations.
  • Starfish (5%): Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don’t like to be the centre of attention. The remainder of those in the poll said the position they fell asleep varied or did not know.According to the Professor, sleeping positions also affect health as follows:

Freefall – good for digestion; “Lying down flat means that stomach contents can more readily be worked back up into the mouth..”

Starfish / Soldier – more likely to lead to snoring, bad night’s sleep, breathing less well

Personally, sleeping on my stomach in Freefall makes it very hard to breath (but that is how our youngest, M2, sleeps).ย  And the most restful pose as taught in yoga is the equivalent of the Soldier position.

I used to sleep on my side for many years (legs in fetal position) but after taking up yoga, I began noticing that side sleeping made it difficult for me to breath (contrary to the findings of the Profess0r). Instead, I found myself sleeping more and more on my back, either with hands at the side, or up against my pillow (as in a “surrender” position).

Certainly, Prof. Idzikowski’sย  study arouses curiosity about how it reveals the personality of the sleeper. Hmmmm….this might be a clue for singles who want to know more about the REAL character of someone they are interested in — ask them how they sleep! ๐Ÿ™‚

What about you — would you like to tell me your sleeping position?

Too bad I could not make it to the EB with the other bloggers. Had to work overtime that night. Please look me up when you come back to Manila. Leave a post and we can meet up again.

    3. I was a freefall sleeper until I found that it was bad for you. Now after getting a body pillow to keep me on my side, does that change who I am?

Let me know what you think!
